Giant Dragonfly

Dragonflies are considered symbols of family, especially as they are seen congregating around waterholes, representing the coming together of families.

In Aboriginal Australian culture, the dragonfly is a meaningful symbol rooted deeply in both daily life and dreamtime stories. Dragonflies are commonly associated with transformation, movement, and good health, representing progress and renewal within individuals and communities.

In some Aboriginal groups, dragonflies are understood as “cheeky stickybeaks”—busy observers always moving from place to place, bringing comfort during times of stress or sadness. ​They are also connected with healing and community, as their movements from plant to plant parallel the work of healers in Aboriginal communities.

Their presence is seen during seasonal transitions such as the arrival of the dry season in northern Australia, making them important natural indicators for traditional ecological knowledge and cultural practices.
