Carnaby's Black Cockatoo Fine Art Print
CARNABY’S BLACK COCKATOO
In Aboriginal dreaming stories, the black cockatoo is said to represent spirit-strengthening, change and herald rain.
Endemic to the south-west of Western Australia, their name is ‘ngoolark’ in aboriginal Noongar language. They like to eat the seeds of native Banksia, Hakea, Eucalyptus and Grevillea plants which they get to with their very powerful beak. They also eat pinecones, nectar from flowers and insect larvae. Carnaby’s can live to the age of 50!
They grow up to 60 centimetres and are one of Australia’s five black cockatoo species. Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoos choose one partner for life and will only nest in 100 year old eucalyptus trees. They are endangered because these trees are being cut down.
Cockatoos need remnants of native vegetation within 12 kilometres of their nesting sites to raise healthy chicks. Sometimes known as the ‘rain bird’, Carnaby’s breed in the drier part of their habitat range and move to higher rainfall areas in the summer.
